94FM The Fish You Matter Saturday
Station Events

On Saturday morning, June 25th, 94FM the Fish along with Tri-Star Southern Hills Medical Center, One Generation Away food distribution ministry and Fifth Third Bank partnered on our first “You Matter Saturday” event. (See video recap here).
From 8am to noon in what grew to be a 110+ degree heat index station staff gathered on the parking lot of Progressive Baptist Church near 12th and Wedgewood in Nashville to serve some of the less fortunate of our community. Over fifteen tons of fresh food was distributed to 273 neighborhood families representing 835 area residents. Free healthcare screenings and healthcare vouchers were provided to 100+ individuals. Numerous others received assistance with personal money management and banking issues.
And at least one life likely was saved as a diabetic male became sick in the parking lot. Medical staff on hand found his blood pressure basically to be off the charts. EMTs were called and upon arrival, the man resisted going to the hospital not wanting to part ways with the food he’d received. Upon assurance from 94FM the Fish staff that they would get his food to his family, he began crying and agreed to go to the hospital with the EMTs, one of whom said that if this man had not shown up this day, they wouldn’t be taking him to the hospital. Instead, they’d be carrying him out of his home in a body bag.
Another meaningful moment came at the end of the event when a woman who spoke little English approached 94FM the Fish staff. By pointing at an empty box fan box and saying, “no money” and “hot” intermixed with a string of words we didn’t understand, we realized she was asking for a fan. We gave her a box fan. She broke out into a big grin and slung the thing over her shoulder. The momentum from that action made her and the fan start to fall backwards and the station general manager personally was able to catch them and keep them from crashing to the ground. She bounced up and was smiling, hugging everyone she could get her little arms around and leaping for joy.
This was the first 94FM the Fish “You Matter Saturday” event and comes on the heels of recent events the station conducted to benefit the Nashville Rescue Mission, Project Search/Monroe Carrell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt and a segment of the Nashville business community via the Tennessee Christian Chamber of Commerce. The next 94FM the Fish “You Matter Saturday” event will be September 10th at the Cleveland Community Center in east Nashville.
